Artist Statement

Hi, I’m AKA:leo.

 

I compose electronic ambient and experimental music. My practice involves employing electronic instrumentation and chiptune elements in my pieces that are heavily inspired by game music. I use these electronic elements to create immersive and experimental ambient music pieces that explore concepts such as reality, expectation, perception, authenticity, and synthetic qualities. I like to write pieces that creates, builds, breaks down or destroys the reality of the listener.

 

I’m interested in exploring perceptions of reality through electronic music because of it’s synthetic quality. I like how the instrumentation parallels the divide in authenticity between real life and the digital space. I create ambient pieces of music due to the immersive quality of listening to elongated waves of sound. I enjoy the timbres and textures of sounds, so a lot of my work uses sounds that I find interesting to highlight as a focal point in my tracks, for example the sound of the chiptune aesthetic.

 

My work is heavily inspired by game music. Soundtracks from games such as Pokémon, Mario Kart, and Minecraft have been a massive influence on me. I could easily get lost in those the digital worlds for hours. Those games generate intense feelings of nostalgia and the influence of them has ultimately bled into my work as a composer now when I think of immersion and senses of reality. These influences can be observed through the of use chiptune elements and electronic instrumentation in my pieces.

 

Nostalgia and the feeling that you can’t go back to a certain point in time is fascinating to me. This feeling of not being able to return to where you once were creates feelings of bittersweetness which can be interesting to play with. My work plays with nostalgia as a way to explore past realities and uses familiar components like chiptune to achieve this.
